CANADA SLAMS THE TARIFF DOOR SHUT.
Counter-duties of 15, 25 and 50 percent on about US$20bn of American goods take effect today.

At 00:01 on 8 September 2026, Ottawa’s counter-duties came into force. Canada is matching Washington dollar-for-dollar on C$27.6 billion — about US$20 billion — of American goods. The rates are 15, 25 and 50 percent, copied from the U.S. list. That clock is the story. Not a threat. Not a draft. The door shut at one minute past midnight.
Finance Canada published the product list in August. About 700 product lines sit on it. Steel, dairy, appliances, farm kit, paper and electronics are on the sheet. Furniture, clothing and some beauty goods take the top 50 percent band. The middle and lower bands take 25 and 15 percent. This Extra does not invent a tariff code. It files the bands as Ottawa printed them.
Canada will match the new U.S. tariffs dollar for dollar, rate for rate.
Goods already in transit when the clock hit are carved out. That carve-out is Finance Canada’s, not this desk’s. Importers who cleared before 12:01 a.m. on 8 September are not the test case. The test case is the next truck, the next container, the next invoice that was not already on the water.
This is the answer to U.S. 50 percent tariffs that hit Canadian goods on 22 August 2026 after talks collapsed. Ottawa calls it a focused, rate-for-rate reply, not a new war. Dollar for dollar, rate for rate: that is the Finance Canada line this Extra already carries in the pull. It does not dress it up.
A C$7.5 billion support package for Canadian workers and firms was already announced. Existing Canadian counter-tariffs, including on autos, remain in place. The new list does not replace those earlier duties. It sits on top of a border that was already expensive. Talks are not the story today. The duties are.
CONFIRMED on this Extra: 00:01 / 12:01 a.m., 8 September 2026; C$27.6 billion, about US$20 billion; 15, 25 and 50 percent; about 700 lines; in-transit goods carved out; the August list; the C$7.5 billion package; autos already dutied. NOT this Extra: the later U.S. import bans on certain Canadian alcohol, dairy and motorcycles from 29 September. That is a different door, a different slug. Do not fold it in here.
The arithmetic is now on the importer. A 50 percent band on furniture or clothing is not a press release. It is a landed cost. A 15 percent band is still a cost. This desk does not forecast a store price. It files the rates Ottawa copied from Washington’s list and the hour they became real.
