POWER DESK — Twenty-five years to the minute. Friday 11 September 2026 opens on the National September 11 Memorial plaza in Lower Manhattan with credentialed families only — not a tourist morning. They walk the bronze parapets and read 2,983 names: the men, women and children killed in the 11 September 2001 attacks and in the 26 February 1993 World Trade Center bombing. The family ceremony starts at 8:30 a.m. Eastern. Six silences have always mapped the day: American Airlines Flight 11 into the North Tower at 8:46; United Airlines Flight 175 into the South Tower; the Pentagon impact; the South Tower collapse; United Airlines Flight 93 in a Pennsylvania field; the North Tower collapse at 10:28 a.m. This year the museum added a seventh silence, after the names, for people who died later from 9/11-related illness and injury. That seventh pause is the Extra’s delta.

PBS NewsHour’s 25th-anniversary watch guide frames those later deaths as now surpassing the nearly 3,000 killed on the day itself. Extra carries that comparison as PBS / Memorial framing. The Museum stays family-only all day. Lower Manhattan south of Canal is a closure grid from 6 a.m. Officials ask New Yorkers not to drive it.

PBS says four former presidents — Joe Biden, Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton — plus Hillary Clinton are planning to attend Ground Zero. Treat planned attendance as planned. Do not write them onto the parapet until wires lock the photo. Do not invent a sitting-president walk-up. HOLD invent Trump at the pools.

The map is three sites, not one skyline. Shanksville’s National Memorial and the Pentagon run their own 25th-year programs the same morning. Flight 93 never reached a runway. The Pentagon still has 184 benches. New York gets the cameras. The other two keep the minutes.
